Comparison of Observations by WSR-88D and High Resolution Mobile Doppler Radar in Tornadoes and a Hurricane

Jennifer Winslow, Joshua Wurman, University of Oklahoma, School of Meteorology

Both the KLTX WSR-88D and the Doppler On Wheels (DOW) observed Hurricane Fran on Sept. 09/96 as it made landfall. Comparisons will be presented between the coarser KLTX data and that from the DOW. Similarly a comparison of the WSR-88D data for the Dimmit, TX tornado on June 2/95, and the Rolla, KS tornado on May 31/96 as observed by the DOW will be performed. How does WSR-88D fare when looking at a weak, large, tornado (Rolla) compared with a strong tornado, as "ground truthed" by the DOW?
