Swedish scientists have had significant impacts on the development of atmospheric science. From Renaissance writings by Olaus Magnus, to vortex experiments by Wilcke (1700s) and theoretical studies of moving vortex wind fields (Sandstrom), Swedes have contributed to thc understanding of tornadoes in particular. Surprisingly Sweden has also experienced notable tornadic events, recorded as early as the 1700s continuing into the 1990s. This paper surveys both the observational record and the research of tornadoes in Sweden from earliest times. In particular, significant characteristics of the tomado events are assessed; the synoptic settings, damage swath patterns and vortex morphology derived from eyewitness accounts and post-storm investigations.
