The Value of Gap Filing Radars in Making More Accurate QPE over Complex Terrain

The focus of NSSL's contribution to the HydroMet Testbed Project is to improve Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) techniques using multiple sensors especially radar data over the North Fork of the American River (ARB). An important component to deriving the most accurate QPE in this region is the evaluation of the usefulness of gap filling radars to supplement the National Weather Service's WSR-88D network radar coverage. QPE estimates with and without gap filling radar data will be evaluated using the NSSL Q2 radar mosaic system vis-a-vi raingage and river stream (Hydrograph) data.
