Phase Coding

[slide compares Doppler velocity with medium PRT and with processing as on WSR-88D]

Notes:
Right panel: Velocity field of the same event as the reflectivity. The pulse repetition time is short same as on the WSR-88D for measuring velocities; needs to be such so that large velocities can be measured. Processing is the same as on the WSR-88D network. The pink areas are where the overlaid echoes prevent measurement of velocities.

Left panel: The same velocity fields but obtained a minute later using phase coding and processing with the SZ-2 algorithm. The code and algorithm have been developed at NSSL. Most of the velocities can be measured and the pink area is mainly in regions where strong ground clutter from the first trip prevents measurement in the second trip region.
