Doppler Radar Initiatives

NSSL’s first Doppler weather radar (1964-70)
(Roger Lhermitte, Dale Sirmans)

Notes:
Besides developing the full capabilities of the network of WSR-57 radars used by the USWB, NSSL initiated research to develop a Doppler weather radar. A description of this radar is given by Dale and John Carter in the Tech. Cir. #8 (Dec.1968). Technician Jess Jennings was heavily involved in assisting Roger and Dale in the construction of this radar. Roger Lhermitte joined NSSL in December 1964, but I believe he was already guiding the development of the 3 cm wavelength pulsed-Doppler radar before he officially became a member of NSSL.
