The Joint Doppler Operational Project
1977-1979

• Joined the NWS, FAA, and AWS in a collaborative experiment to asses the usefulness of Doppler information in an operational setting:
  • NSSL's 10 cm Norman Doppler radar
  • AFCRL's 5 cm Doppler radar (1979)
• The success of JDOP lead to the development of NEXRAD (WSR-88D)

Notes:
Another milestone in NSSL’s past is the JDOP project. Although NSSL’s Doppler radar was the one being tested, AFGRL also brought their 5 cm radar to compare observations. This project convincingly showed the superior performance of 10 cm wavelengths over that obtained with a 5 cm wavelength radar observing severe weather at long ranges.
