Challenging Detection
As was the case with the
Stecker tornado in Storm A, there is little precipitation wrapping around
this tornado southwest of Anadarko. This results in too few inbound velocity
gates for an algorithm detection, at least at the lowest tilt. The
strong shear at tilt 2 should have been detected, but was missed by the
MDA. At the third tilt, a dealiasing error corrupts the data. By
this time, the radar beam is already up to near 5.3 km in the storm, and
subsequent scans are too high to detect the low and mid-level mesocyclone.
The detected mesocyclone is valid, but is not the one responsible for the
tornado occurring during this particular volume scan.
