The roots of The NSSL Colloquium go back to at least 2002. The NSSL Visiting Scientist Program and Seminar Series was proposed in January 2002 by David Schultz to the NSSL Director. The purpose of the Visiting Scientist Program was to:
Although the Visiting Scientist Program was not funded in 2002, the seeds were sown, which would later germinate in 2005 as The National Severe Storms Laboratory Colloquium.
The NSSL Colloquium was funded by a competitive $10,000 grant from the NSSL Director's Discretionary Fund in early 2005. Some of that grant paid for travel for visitors during the 2005 NSSL/SPC Spring Experiment. With the move of the NOAA and University of Oklahoma weather units into the National Weather Center building, scientists envisioned a need for a high-profile seminar series featuring renowned invited speakers. Such a seminar series will engage the National Weather Center's NOAA and University communities, the City of Norman, private weather enterprises and the public. The NSSL Colloquium will serve as a model for a future National Weather Center Colloquium.
