The Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC) is one of nine National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) service centers. HPC supports the National Weather Service and its users through delivery of a wide variety of operational hydrometeorological guidance, including quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF) over the contiguous United States. This talk will provide an overview of HPC’s activities and plans, and highlight specific forecast challenges and research opportunities related to QPF. Particular focus will be placed on research needs and collaborative opportunities in the areas of warm-season convection, probabilistic QPF, and precipitation measurement. The talk will also introduce HPC’s Hydrometeorological Testbed, with emphasis on current activities and plans.
