This flight was called to describe the LLJ that was forecast from Eta output, and observed the previous day. In-flight profiler data was used to verify winds over the northern Gulf and ensure continuation of the flight. Over the northern Gulf the flight tracks were separated to obtain east-west gradient information as much as possible. Over far northwestern Gulf the moist layer was very shallow - less than 500 ft depth. Although the low-level winds measured on during this flight are weaker than the previous day, they are more uniformly up-Gulf (below 900mb). Relatively small time-changes were observed on the common legs (inbound and outbound) which should make for easier/more confident analysis of the data. Mid-Gulf flow at 850mb and higher clearly shows a cyclonic vortex or cyclonic shear - a feature observed on various flights. |
