The first NOAA P-3 flight was called to examine the low-level moisture fluxes into the southern part of the Gulf of California and to help determine the best pattern and operating altitudes for such missions. From previous day satellite imagery and forecast info the conditions would represent "normal" convective activity over the central and southern Sierra Madre Occidental. A flight was also desired early in the EOP, to contrast with conditions approximately one month from now (presumably higher SST's at the least).

Plots from the flight level data will come later, below is a condensed description of the flight and conditions observed.

In general, the aircraft flew a pattern with a mode of descending or ascending between the lowest level (500 ft over the ocean and 1000 ft over the land). The aircraft first flew to near the Altair (for SST intercomparison of the downward looking radiometer on the P-3 with Altair measurements) and then a series of zig-zags (while porpoising) up the gulf to approximately the latitude of Guaymas. The P-3 flew across the Baja California peninsula near Santa Rosalia and flew to 27.3N 115.3W, then turned south and finally SE, flying parallel to the peninsula, reaching 21N, 110W, before turning east and returning to Mazatlan. Most porpoises varied from 5000-6000ft maximum altitude but six extended to 10,000 ft (~695mb). About 45 soundings were made. Widespread low clouds were observed on the Pacific legs, with SST's varying from about 17C near the coast near Punta Eugenia to 30C southwest of Mazatlan.

No data problems were encountered during the flight. Some difficulties operating with flexibility within 50 miles of Mazatlan airport, though these were minor.
