NSSL staff honored by NOAA

NSSL’s Doug Forsyth, Executive Director of Facilities and Strategic Planning and Chief of the Radar Research and Development Division is being honored with a 2007 NOAA Administrator’s award. The award citation reads, “In recognition of leadership in overseeing the design, construction and occupancy of the National Weather Center, a joint NOAA and University of Oklahoma project which was realized both on time and under budget.” Forsyth joined the project as NOAA Program Manager at its inception in 1994. His involvement progressed to spending countless hours on behalf of all NOAA units during design, construction, and the move to the National Weather Center (NWC). Housing all Norman, Okla. Weather research in the National Weather Center has already encouraged collaboration between researchers, developers and forecasters towards improving knowledge and tools that will lead to better forecasts and warnings of hazardous weather.

NSSL employee, David P. Jorgensen, Chief, Warning Research and Development, is also being awarded a 2007 NOAA Administrator’s Award as part of the NOAA team that participated in the Debris Flow Project with the USGS. The team is being honored “For the successful planning, implementation and initial deployment in the San Diego and Oxnard Hydrologic Service Areas of the first NOAA/USGS Debris – Flow Warning System.” In addition to assisting with the project, NSSL’s contribution was to gather very high-resolution rainfall data sets to be used by USGS to refine their thresholds for debris flows. This capability will allow NWS forecasters together with the USGS to issue debris flow outlooks, watches and warnings.

The awards will be presented on September 25 in Silver Spring, MD.

Significance: Promotes environmental stewardship by ensuring climate science is used for informed decision making and better serve society’s need for weather and water information.
