American Meteorological Society’s 87th Annual Meeting

NSSL has a strong presence at the American Meteorological Society’s 87th Annual Meeting being held this week in San Antonio, Texas. NSSL’s Field Command Vehicle was showcased at WeatherFest, a public super-sized weather science fair held on Sunday, January 14, 2007. Over 2800 people from the San Antonio area turned out to play weather games, collect weather materials, and participate in hands-on activities.

NSSL Director James Kimpel and Deputy Director Kevin Kelleher are attending the meeting this week along with many NSSL scientists presenting their research. Highlights include: updates on the National Weather Radar Testbed (Phased Array) and new research using the NWRT, a study to characterize the hydrologic impacts of the Gulf of Mexico tropical systems, and a new approach to address the tornado prediction problem.  Another talk sparking interest this week is, “Native American Representation in Weather-Related Fields…An Opportunity for Science Program and Policy Success,” presented by NSSL’s Suzanne Van Cooten, believed to be the first Native American female Ph.D. meteorologist in the U.S.
