Journalists Learn About Violent Weather in Norman

Fifteen journalists from throughout the country are learning about violent weather during a National Press Foundation Workshop in Norman this week. Speakers from the National Severe Storms Laboratory include Harold Brooks on tornadoes, Lou Wicker on scientific storm chasing, Suzanne VanCooten on floods and flash floods. The participants also toured the phased array radar and the other NOAA Weather Partners in Norman.

Journalists applied to participate in the workshop, which is sponsored by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. Keli Tarp, NOAA Public Affairs Specialist in Norman, worked with organizers for a year to put together an interesting and useful program.

Other NOAA speakers include Lynn Maximuk from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Kansas City and Gerry Bell with the National Centers for Environmental Prediction in Camp Springs, Md.

The journalists represent TV, print and radio media and are from all parts of the U.S. - San Diego to South Dakota and Florida to New York.
