Tornado Outbreak Highlights Issue of Mobile Homes and Tornadoes
The deadliest tornado outbreak since 1999 occurred early Sunday morning (Nov. 6) in Indiana and Kentucky. The devastation included 22 dead, 200 injured, almost 500 homes destroyed or damaged, and 5,400 customers without power in two Indiana counties. The most destructive twister swept through a mobile home park, killing 17 people.
Research meteorologist Harold Brooks from the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory was interviewed by several media outlets about his research regarding tornado deaths in mobile homes.
From 2000 to 2005, 139 of 257 US tornado deaths (54.1 percent) have been in mobile homes.
