Indian meteorological administration officials visit NSSL
Two weather experts from India are visiting the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory as part of an international research and exchange program.
Swapan Kumar "Roy" Bhowmik, director of the Indian Numerical Weather Prediction office for the Indian Meteorological Department, and Surinder Kaur, director of hydrometeorology for the Indian department, visited NSSL and toured weather organizations in Norman and Tulsa for five days beginning March 30.
Bhowmik spoke about the challenges of monitoring weather in India and predicting conditions that can bring monsoon rainfall during a seminar April 1.
Ken Howard, NSSL research meteorologist and program manager, coordinated the visit.
The country of India is in the process of a weather service modernization and training program.
The National Weather Service's International Affairs office is hosting the Indian officials' visits through support from the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development. NSSL and the National Weather Service plan to send American scientists to visit India's weather service centers at a later date.
